Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce officially confirmed their engagement last week, sending shockwaves through both the sports and entertainment worlds. Now, Kelce’s father, Ed Kelce, is pulling back the curtain on how the moment unfolded, describing in heartfelt detail the proposal, the family’s reaction, and what he sees in the couple’s future together.

In an interview with News 5’s John Kosich, Ed Kelce explained that his son proposed to the global superstar almost two weeks ago, more than two years after the pair began dating and quickly became one of the most talked-about celebrity couples in the world. While the announcement came in a polished joint social media post on Tuesday, Ed said the actual moment was far more intimate and personal.
“Travis actually did the proposal, oh, maybe two weeks, not quite two weeks ago,” Ed revealed. “He was going to put it off till this week. I think she was getting maybe a little antsy, but he was going to put her off till this week, to, you know, make some grand thing, to make it a big special event. And I told him repeatedly, you know, you could do it on the side of the road, do it any place that makes it a special event … when you get down on one knee and ask her to marry you.”
According to Ed, Taylor’s father, Scott Swift, had been encouraging Travis with the same advice: that the proposal didn’t need to be a spectacle, just a meaningful moment between two people in love. In the end, Travis chose a deeply personal setting — the garden at his home in Lee’s Summit, Missouri.

“He got her out there, they were about to go out to dinner, and he said, ‘let’s go out and have a glass of wine,’ … they got out there, and that’s when he asked her, and it was beautiful,” Ed recalled. “They started FaceTiming me and their mother and her folks to make sure everybody knew. So, to see them together is great.”
Ed himself found out while at a Philadelphia Eagles practice session. The Eagles had opened practice to the public that night, drawing a staggering 60,000 fans, but for Ed, the most important call of the evening came on his phone.
“I was at … an Eagles practice, a public practice that they had a lot of people at, well, the Eagles had 60,000 people at a public practice two weeks ago on a Sunday night,” Ed explained. “So at that practice … I got a FaceTime call from them, and as soon as I saw the FaceTime, I saw it was Travis, and then I saw Taylor there with him, I knew what they were going to say, and they, you know, let us know.”
Ed said he had known about Travis’s plan for months, admitting that he even thought his son might propose during last year’s NFL season. What he didn’t expect was just how happy the relationship would make Travis.
“We actually went to a thing in KC Sunday night, which was an ESPN airing of The Kingdom and went to that, and his mother and I went with him back to his house for dinner, where Taylor made dinner, and we had a wonderful dinner with them outside on the patio and to just watch the two of them, just crazy about each other. It’s truly kinda neat,” Ed said, smiling.
Though the engagement is still fresh, and no official wedding planning has started yet, Ed Kelce says he is ready for whatever comes next. To him, this isn’t just about headlines or the blending of two high-profile careers; it’s about the simple, genuine love he sees in his son’s life.
“They’re just two young people very much in love, cast in a spotlight that they really haven’t sought but kind of followed with their success in their respective fields,” he reflected.

For fans of Swift and Kelce, the news is both surprising and inevitable. The two have spent the past two years under constant media scrutiny — Swift at the height of her global music dominance, and Kelce leading the Kansas City Chiefs to back-to-back Super Bowl appearances. Their relationship often drew coverage from both sports and entertainment press, with photos of them at concerts, NFL games, and family gatherings fueling endless speculation. Still, Ed’s description of the engagement strips away the glitter and glamour, painting a picture of two people who, in his words, are simply “crazy about each other.”
What happens next remains unclear. Wedding dates, locations, or details have not yet been revealed, and given the couple’s busy careers, planning might take time. But Ed’s words offer a sense of stability amid the frenzy. “To see them together is great,” he repeated. For him, the engagement is not just a celebrity headline but a deeply personal milestone, one that marks the next step in a relationship he describes with quiet pride.
As the spotlight intensifies, it is likely the couple will continue to face both adoration and scrutiny. Yet Ed Kelce’s perspective is a reminder that beyond the headlines, beyond the speculation, this is simply the story of two people who chose each other. “It’s truly kinda neat,” he said again of their happiness, perhaps capturing the simplicity behind one of the biggest celebrity stories of the year.
